fine & dainty goods: Random Portraits →
fine-and-dainty: I just love portraits. I’m always scouring antique stores or garage sales for them. I like the idea of having random people on my walls staring back at me. When I was little I remember we had a portrait of this woman in our house. I had no idea who she was, so I concocted this elaborate story that…

WatchWatch
Just watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s The Layover: Rome and it made me crave some Cacio e Pepe. Here is a good video from Bon Appetit to show how easy it is to make.  Buon appetito!

Can I get you a drink?
Next time you go out to eat, think twice about that pre-dinner drink. If you’ve never had an aperitif, this article has some great suggestions. One of my favorites is Lillet, it’s so good on ice with a twist of lemon. Bon appetit!

OCPD is design
Not only do I love this piece of art but I love the photo!  I don’t think my need for organization and order can be categorized as OCPD (although some guy asked me if I was OCD at a party I threw the other week!) Ok I admit that all of the beverage labels need to face forward in my fridge, but it’s not a disease, right? I say it’s more of an attempt to organize the chaos of...

Spirits of the Northwest
With an emphasis on flavor rather than alcohol, the Pacific Northwest is rapidly becoming a leader in craft-oriented small-batch distilling. By Cole Danehower From the May/June 2011 issue Just as the Northwest pioneered craft brewing in the 1980s, and as our regional wine scene developed during the same period, so today the region is home to a rapidly growing population of indie spirits...

The Perfect Pallet
I love taking everyday objects and using them in unique and creative ways. Giving a second life to something that would normally be discarded. Pallets are one of those objects that can be transformed into so many different things. I love what Fern Richardson over at Life on the Balcony has done with her pallets.

Cold Brew
Stumptown Coffee cold brew stubbies are here! Finally a bottled ice coffee that isn’t loaded with sugar and milk. It’s black and it’s bold. Althought I don’t sweeten my coffee, I do add a dash of cream. I like the idea that people can add to it as they see fit. Each stubbie comes with an “enjoy by” date that gives you around 10 days to drink up. Right now...

Verana
Who’s coming with me?? Fly into Puerto Vallarta then a quick drive gets you to Boca de Tomatlan — the last beach you can reach by car. From there it’s a 30 minute boat ride along the beautiful coast to Yelapa. On your arrival you will be greeted at the beach with mules who will take you and your luggage to the hillside location. Dutch Tub
Weltevree is a Dutch company that makes products for the living environment. One of their coolest creations is the Dutch Tub. I have always been a water junkie and have a two-bath-a-day habit.  I love being by the water, and love even more to be in it.  There is nothing more relaxing to me than floating in water, so when I saw the Dutch Tub a few years ago I fell in love.  They’ve created a...

Pickling Momofuku Style
I’m a bit obsessed with David Chang and his string of Momofuku restaurants in NY. I haven’t been to any of them yet, but they are at the top on my list. Everyone raves about his pickled vegetables, and since I have been in the pickling mood lately, I thought I would give his quick recipe a try. Momofuku pickling recipe For brine: 1 cup very hot tap water 1/2 cup rice-wine...

The Art of Hair
I tried the Shu Uemura Absolute Essence oil out the other day and died. It is amazing and smells so good. So good, they make a candle with the same scent. A few years ago I started to get a fragrance sensitivity. I literally have to cover my nose and mouth when I would walk through the perfume section of a department store. Too much perfume or exposure to certain sprays will give me a doozy of...

Eat Cake
Sometimes cake is just too beautiful to eat, well almost. It can truly be a work of art. The colors on this raspberry pistachio encrusted cheesecake are stunning. I love all things white! This guinness chocolate cake is simply beautiful. I just love “Rose Frill” from Maggie Austin Cake in DC. It looks so fragile and delicate.

Washi Washi
Washi is a type of paper made in Japan. Washi is commonly made using fibers from the bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry, but also can be made using bamboo, hemp, rice, and wheat. Washi comes from wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper, and the term is used to describe paper made by hand in the traditional manner. This multi-purpose adhesive tape  is known for...
